"If you want to design a car in an open source way, maybe you'll work with a corporation that has access to an expensive wind tunnel," he says. This sort of cooperation has become common for open source software. IBM and Sun Microsystems pay staff members to contribute to Linux because it's in the companies' interest to have the software grow more powerful, even if competitors benefit. (Wired)
